The wooded trails at Mountsberg are always beautiful in the wintertime but now we have made them more magical than ever! The Winterlit Trail features a unique and stunning lighting experience with inspirational art installations along the trail. Also, the Illuminated Sugarbush Trail has soft overhead lighting to allow for a beautiful evening stroll through the sugarbush. This experience will include soundtracks from local musicians while you enjoy the beauty of Mountsberg in winter. The Winterlit experience will be offered from 星期四 to 星期日 evenings.

On select evenings you will be able to add one of our favourite winter wildlife excursions, Owl Prowl! As part of Conservation Halton’s dedication to educating the public about the environment and nature, guided Owl Prowls are offered by Mountsberg’s Raptor Centre staff on select dates – 一月 6, 7, 13, 14, and 2月 3 and 4. These mysterious creatures are particularly active this time of year and this additional program promises to lead guests off the beaten path and into the woods to listen for wild owls after meeting one of the resident Mountsberg owls nose-to-beak. Passes for these special walks are limited and can be added to your Winterlit ticket.

This is a call for creative vendors who want to participate at Winterlit! The wooded trails at Mountsberg are always beautiful in the wintertime but now we have made them more magical than ever! Makers of all sorts – foodies, artists, printmakers, textile designers, up-cyclers, zero-waste, vintage curators, collectors, jewellers and open to other categories. Applicants must be the designer or primary maker of their goods.

What is different on Winterlit Enchanted Evenings?
Winterlit Enchanted Evenings are offered in celebration of New Year’s Eve and Valentine’s Day weekend. These evenings feature live performers and musicians as well as the licensed Winterlit Ice Bar, in addition to our regular Winterlit trails and programming.

Reservation Questions, Changes, & Cancellation
How do I make a reservation/get tickets?

Click here and then simply reserve your visit, just as you would reserve your hike time for any of our parks. You will receive a record of your reservation via email, please bring this email with you for check-in. We will also be able to retrieve your reservation via your license plate number.
Can I change my booking date or time?
No, Winterlit is a rain/snow or “shine” event.
Can I book multiple vehicles/families under the same reservation?
No, please book only one vehicle/household per reservation. License plate numbers are used to grant access to the park.
Are dogs allowed at Winterlit?
Yes, dogs are welcome to attend Winterlit! As always at our parks, they must be kept on a 2m leash.
Can we view the animals during Winterlit?
The raptor trail and farm animal barn are closed during Winterlit. Just like many humans, our animals are healthier and in better spirits when they get a good night’s sleep!

How long is the Winterlit Trail?
There are approximately 2km of illuminated trails at Winterlit.

Can I add-on to my experience at Winterlit?

Cookie Baking
Looking to add a little extra sweetness and hands-on fun to your Winterlit experience? Join us in the Discovery Centre to bake up a batch of cookies to take home or eat around the fire. Perfect for families, the young at heart, or anyone with a sweet tooth. Our cookie dough is from Terra Cotta Cookie and is nut free. $12.00 for 6 cookies

Guided Owl Prowls
Offered Jan 6&7, Jan 13&14, Feb 3&4 at 6:00pm, 7:30pm, 9:00pm
Did you know that winter is Owl Season? Extend your hike by join Mountsberg’s knowledgeable Raptor Centre staff for a meet and greet with one of the park’s live owl ambassadors and then head out for a night hike to see who’s hooting! We’ll take you out into some of the unlit areas of the park for a wintery adventure! $6.50 per person, experience is 45 minutes in length. NOTE: Dogs are not permitted on the Owl Prowl.

Do I need to bring a receipt with me to Winterlit?
Yes, please bring your reservation email with you on your phone. There is no need to bring a printed copy. Your reservation will be validated at check-in.
Do I have to arrive at the start of my reservation time?
Your reservation start time will be stated on your e-ticket. It is important to arrive on time for your reservation to ensure a quality experience and sufficient parking for all guests.
Can I just show up without a reservation?
No, pre-booked tickets are required to ensure we can provide a quality experience for all our guests.

Will Conservation Halton ever cancel Winterlit?
Sometimes cancellations occur due to extreme weather. We will email guests as soon as possible if they will be impacted by a closure. We will also keep our social media platforms updated. Follow Conservation Halton on Facebook, Twitter, or Instagram.

Logistics—parking, check-in, start times & clothing

Parking
Parking is included in your reservation fee. Parking is located in the main parking lot outside of the Discovery Centre.
Check-in & start times
You will check in with an attendant at the Mountsberg gate house upon arrival. The attendant will check your reservation matches vehicle occupancy, provide you with a map of the grounds and answer questions about your visit. Please arrive at the start of your reservation time to avoid disappointment or overcrowding.
Clothing
Please dress appropriately for the weather, Winterlit is entirely outdoors. Warm, sturdy footwear and fredding in layers is strongly recommended.

Accessibility

Strollers & Wheelchairs
Both the Illuminated Sugar Bush Trail (1km) and Winterlit Trail (600m) are wide and hard packed. Both trails are unpaved with some uneven sections and slight incline/declines. Access to the Illuminated Sugar Bush Trail takes guests across a train crossing that has some uneven sections. Although the trails will be plowed, fresh snow or ice impacts trail conditions and may make travel difficult for strollers or people with mobility challenges. Please contact us for more information about accessibility – we are happy to help! – visitorservices@hrca.on.ca.
Washrooms
Indoor washrooms including an accessible/family washroom are available in the Discovery Centre located beside the parking lot. Washrooms, including wheelchair-accessible stalls and change tables are also available in the Sugar Bush. Some locations may have lips at doorways that require assistance for wheelchair users or strollers.

Not only is Winterlit an enchanting experience for our community, but it is also based on the concept of providing a sustainable event. It is a privilege to be caretakers of Conservation Halton Parks so we can all enjoy them for generations to come. As in everything we do, #ConservationMatters on the Winterlit Trail! Materials selected for the trail are recycled, upcycled, and energy-efficient, and created with love by our Conservation Halton team. Here are just a few ways we’ve implemented sustainable practices at Winterlit:

• All lighting is LED for the lowest energy footprint

• We use electric battery packs rather than gas generators to bring lights to the remote parts of the trail

• Most of the wood elements on the trail are created from ash trees that had to be removed from our parks due to the impact of the Emerald Ash Borer, an invasive insect

• The remaining elements have been created out of recycled or upcycled products by our talented staff. Check out the signage on the trail to find out which installation was repurposed from one of the set pieces from the movie ‘Down Sizing’ which was filmed at Area 8 Conservation Area!

Catherine Tammaro
Creator of “Tekyuharhtes – Star Lodge” a new installation for Winterlit 2022/23

Catherine Tammaro is a multi-disciplinary artist whose practise spans decades.

凯瑟琳是一个坐着的斑鸠族信仰守护者，在整个多伦多市和其他地方都很活跃，在许多组织中担任居住长老、导师、教师和文化顾问。她是安大略省艺术学院的校友，拥有多元化的职业生涯，举办过多次展览和装置，发表过书面作品和演讲，并继续她的创作实践。

Catherine actively supports the work and development of other artists on an ongoing basis. She served on the Board of the TAC, TAC’s Income Precarity Working Group and was the Chair of the Toronto Arts Council’s Indigenous Advisory Committee in 2020/21 and is the Indigenous Arts Program Manager at Toronto Arts Council and continues teaching, learning and exploring her creativity and that of others.

WLU & CH Making Music Together

For the 2022/23 season of Winterlit, Wilfrid Laurier University (WLU) and Conservation Halton have come together in a unique partnership to celebrate talented young composers and musicians.

Under the direction of Barbara Assiginaak (Assistant Professor and Coordinator, Composition and IMA programs at the Faculty of Music, WLU), second, third and fourth-year Laurier Composition and IMA program students have created original compositions to compliment various natural spaces on the Winterlit Trail.

Taking their lead from Ms. Assiginaak, whose own work centers on strong Anishinaabe connections to the land, air, and water, the students worked to develop pieces that evoke a sense of place in the beautiful natural environs of Mountsberg Conservation Area.

If you listen closely, you may hear the students re-creating natural sounds – the English horn becomes the howl of a wolf, the harp becomes the movement of water, and the piano the very stars overhead.

We hope you find yourself transported by the music of these talented young composers as you travel the Winterlit Trail.

Adonijah Mitchell

Adonijah is a saxophonist studying music at Wilfrid Laurier University with a concentration in composition. Starting out around 2018 with various styles, Adonijah has developed a focus towards digital orchestral composition using virtual instruments known as “sample libraries”. This method commonly used in film score and video game music has allowed Adonijah to work towards the goal of creating larger than life convincing music as an individual musician. In the future, Adonijah hopes to write music and sound design for video games, and to continue to enhance the impact of art with sound.

Alexandra Liao

I wrote this piece to combine my classical training as a musician and my culture and ethnicity as a composer. Within this piece, you will hear an alto flute, a flute, and a piano, all of which are European/Western instruments. These instruments will be used to imitate non-European instruments in both sound and style. The story behind this piece is to bring the Chinese stars to life in music for everyone to experience. I specifically chose one star, 虛日鼠 (Mouse), thought to bring good luck and to bring a better tomorrow. I hope this piece can bring peace and luck to everyone into the new year. Jasmine Hourahine

I am a third-year composition student and oboist at Wilfrid Laurier University. I have a background in woodwind instruments and like to use them in my music whenever I can. Working on the Winterlit project has been an exciting opportunity for me, because I draw a lot of artistic inspiration from nature. In this piece, I use the English Horn to emulate the howls wolves use to identify and communicate with each other. I spent time listening to recordings of their calls and researching their behaviour and used that to guide this piece.

 Jotham Sennema

Jotham is a multi-instrumentalist and composer in his fourth year at Laurier. He is studying in the Integrated Musical Arts program, focusing on music production and electronic music. When Jotham isn’t writing music, he is, well, playing music! You can often find him with a trumpet in his hands, at the drum kit, or with a six string on his back. Griffin Noriega

Griffin Noriega is in his third year of studies for the Bachelor of Music in Community Music Program at Wilfrid Laurier University. He has recently started the Integrated Musical Arts stream of the Laurier music program. Griffin is a guitarist and vocalist whose music is a blend of R&B, blues, soul and accompanying studies in jazz. Griffin is passionate about writing, recording and performing original music; he is an avid guitar student and working musician who enjoys sharing his music with others through performances at many local venues and events in his hometown of St. Thomas, Ontario and Southwestern Ontario. Callum Drysdale

Callum Drysdale is a Canadian composer, producer, and multi-instrumentalist. From the age of 5, he has been studying and playing music of both classical and popular varieties. His music incorporates a combination of Jazz and a multitude of other genres ranging from R&B to Classical. He has experience composing for the KW symphony as well as releasing his debut solo album earlier this year. With a strong attention to detail in his melodic phrases and unique rhythmic variations, Callum Drysdale is someone worth taking a closer listen to. Find more of Callum Drysdale’s music on Spotify.

Elysha Vorstenbosch

Elysha Vorstenbosch is a solo harp player, composer and improviser based out of Perth County. Inspired by Catriona McKay, Loreena McKinnett, Yuki Kajiura and Maeve Gilchrist, she explores the realms of Celtic, contemporary classical, electronic and world music. Her compositions and improvisations draw upon her life experiences, fantastical creatures and realities of the imagination, the awe-inspiring creations of the world, and her curiosity of the possibilities of what the lever harp can do. She is currently studying harp under the tutelage of Sharlene Wallace, composition under the tutelage of Cameron McKittrick, Barbara Assiginaak and Kevin Day, and has studied improvisation under the tutelage of Kathryn Ladano while pursuing a Bachelor’s Degree in music at Wilfrid Laurier University.

Stephen Palma Ramirez

Composer and Musician. Looking to compose for different types of media like video projects and games. I love to compose in various genres from Ambient to Cinematic music. When I write a piece I usually finish it with a scene or atmosphere in mind, even if I might not start with one.

Katrina Kampen

I am currently a Piano Major at Wilfred Laurier University working towards a job in composition. I have written a number of pieces but my Winterlit piece is my first electronic work. I have titled the piece “tranquility”.

Bella Sohl

Bella Sohl is a composer, teacher, vocalist, pianist and otherwise multi-instrumentalist currently completing the final year of her Bachelor of Music in Composition at Wilfrid Laurier University. Bella has explored many styles of composition including chamber music, string quartet, electronic music, piano works, art song, songwriting, and choral music. Consistent through all her works, Bella’s main goal is to connect with an audience through her unique voice. Always having been holistic in her composing, Bella explores feelings and abstract ideas through music. In her Winterlit piece, she explores the many meanings of space, the sounds of night and the moon, the magical, and the feminine.

Anthony Domzella

Anthony Domzella is a composer, conductor and pianist studying music at Wilfrid Laurier University. He grew up in Elmira, Ontario, where he works as a music teacher and church music director. His music often incorporates elements of dance forms, process, chance and microtonality. A workshop production of his first opera, Sandcastles, will be presented 一月 21st and 22nd at the Registry Theatre in Kitchener.
