In nature, metamorphosis is the biological process of transformation, differentiation and growth that many species go through as they transition from one life stage to the next. Conservation Halton is going through its own metamorphosis and you will find a few of the phases for this transformation throughout our new strategic plan, Metamorphosis. The first draft of Metamorphosis was approved for consultation by the Conservation Halton Board of Directors on June 23, 2016.
Conservation Halton conducted comprehensive stakeholder and public consultations throughout the summer and fall (more information below) on the draft of the strategic plan. The input received been integrated into the final version of Metamorphosis, which is being presented to the Board of Directors for approval on February 23, 2017.
Metamorphosis is the strategic plan that will guide the direction of Conservation Halton for the next three years. This strategic plan will enable us to invest in innovative ideas and technologies that will modernize our operations. It will empower us to communicate and collaborate more effectively with our current partners and create new relationships within the community. It will enable us to embrace creative solutions for more streamlined service delivery. Most importantly, it will create the capacity for future transformation and position us to become leaders in natural resource management and conservation.
Within the strategic plan, you will find our Promise, Purpose, Ambition, Guiding Principles and Themes, which outline our priorities and our commitment to our environment, communities and customers. You will also find our Key Objectives, Key Enablers and Key Targets, which outline the changes that we will make as an organization and the achievements that we will work toward.
Who We Are & Where We’re Going
Taking care of our growing communities
With many new neighbourhoods and growing communities, it is our priority to protect the people, homes and businesses within our watershed from the risk of flooding and erosion through planning and regulation. We will also make it our priority to support sustainable, innovative approaches to infrastructure and land use that protect and restore the natural environment, enable community growth and contribute to a thriving economy.
Protecting our natural, cultural and scenic assets
The natural systems within our watershed are essential for clean air, safe water, healthy ecosystems, biological diversity, climate change resilience, and flood and erosion control. It is our priority to protect and restore the lands, forests, streams and lakes needed to support these natural systems and maintain the features and functions that preserve the environmental integrity of our watershed. It is also our work to protect the landscapes that create opportunities for recreation and tourism and the landmarks that define our natural and cultural heritage.
Preparing for the effects of climate change
Healthy watershed areas and resilient natural systems will enable us to reduce and better respond to the effects of climate change. It is our priority to better understand the impacts of climate change, increase the ability of our watershed to adapt to these changes and support our communities, agricultural lands and natural environment in dealing with potential flooding, drought and erosion related to climate change. We will also address the impacts of climate change on biodiversity, such as habitat loss and invasive species.
Connecting with nature through our parks
Our watershed is abundant with forests, trails, streams and lakes which offer endless opportunities for active and passive outdoor recreation. It is our priority to use our parks to connect people with nature, support the health and wellness of those who live in our communities and create a living classroom for children to learn about the natural world. It is also a priority for these opportunities to be provided in an environmentally sustainable way, without disrupting plant and animal habitats or any of the natural features and functions of the environment.
Striving for service excellence and efficiency
In order to achieve our goals and objectives as an organization, we will use innovative technologies and creative solutions to operate in a way that is more effective, efficient and agile. We will listen, cooperate and take a proactive approach to accountability and transparency. We will pursue knowledge, share our expertise and offer leadership. Above all, we will strive for service excellence for our customers, clients, partners and staff.
Conservation Halton conducted a stakeholder consultation and public engagement campaign on the draft of our strategic plan, Metamorphosis. The purpose of this campaign was to start meaningful conversations with our community and collect feedback on our strategic priorities. There were five ways that people were encouraged to engage in this campaign:
1. Attend an Open House
Conservation Halton conducted two open houses for members of the public and held meetings with key stakeholders, including municipal partners, builders and developers, recreational groups and environmental organizations.
2. Have Your Say in a Survey
In order to learn more about the issues that are most important to our community, Conservation Halton conducted four surveys around Sustainable Communities, Environmental Conservation, Climate Change and Outdoor Recreation.
3. Social Media Chats
During the months of August and September, Conservation Halton hosted a series of chats on Twitter and Facebook, which focused on the same themes as the surveys, using the #chlistens hashtag.
4. Share Your Lunch with Us
Bright coloured picnic tables with chalkboards were places in each of our parks and visitors were encouraged to use the chalkboards to share their thoughts on conservation and post their responses on social media using the #tableyourthoughts hashtag.
