Takenya the Red Tailed Hawk
Takenya came to the Mountsberg Raptor Centre from a rehab centre in Muskoka where she was recovering from being shot in the wing. Her wing could not be fully repaired enough for her to fly properly so Takenya enjoys life meeting visitors at the Raptor Centre year round!
The Red-tailed Hawk
• Favourite Snacks: The hunt is on for prey from less than an ounce in weight, to upwards of five pounds; Red-tailed Hawks eat voles, mice, wood rats, rabbits, snowshoe hares, jackrabbits, ground squirrels pheasants, bobwhite, starlings, and blackbirds; as well as snakes and carrion.
• Special Talents: Red-tailed Hawks have been seen hunting as a pair, guarding opposite sides of the same tree to catch tree squirrels.
• Nesting: Red-tailed Hawks typically put their nests in the crowns of tall trees where they have a commanding view of the landscape. They may also nest on a cliff ledge or on artificial structures such as window ledges and billboard platforms.
