Pawgwashiing Migizi the Bald Eagle
Meet Pawgwashiing Migizi
After suffering a permanent wing injury as a young bird in 2009, Pawgwashiing was initially cared for by members of Pays Plat First Nation, who gave her a traditional name: "Pawgwashiing Migizi", which means ’Eagle of the Shallow Water’.
The Bald Eagle
• Favourite Snacks: Bald Eagles feed primarily on fish, but also eat small mammals and other birds. They are opportunistic feeders, and will acquire food by hunting, scavenging, or even stealing from other raptors.
• Special Talents: When a Bald Eagle catches a fish that is too heavy to lift out of the water the bird will row itself to shore using its wings
• Bald Eagles were hunted and devastated by habitat loss and the effects of DDT. Recovery efforts and the banning of DDT led to the recovery of North American Bald Eagle populations.
