Your Qualifications

Conservation Halton is pleased to announce the launch of an exciting new volunteer program, the Conservation Halton Trail Association (CHTA).
This exciting new volunteer program will assist the Conservation Operations team with the ongoing management, maintenance, planning and construction of current and future trails across all of Conservation Halton’s parks and properties.
Conservation Halton is seeking passionate individuals that are experienced, dedicated, and want to play a role in positioning CH and our trails as one of (if not THE) premier trail destination within Ontario.
If selected, participants will be able to sign up for various opportunities which are shared via an Online Volunteer Portal by Conservation Halton staff. Opportunities will run on various schedules including weekends and evenings.
The primary responsibilities of this position include:
- Participation in trail workdays and build opportunities. Examples include: the construction of the connecting trails from Area 8 to Kelso, construction of new TTF Features on Kelso MTB trails, construction of detailed rock armouring and other infrastructure projects.
- Assistance with the planning and visioning of current and potential future trails, with a keen focus on CH’s ‘core’ user groups: Hikers, Mountain Bikers and Climbers
- Ongoing assistance in the maintenance and management of current CH trails, including assisting with corridor management, reclamation, vegetation management and trail closures.
- Work in accordance with the Conservation Halton’s Safety Policies & Procedures and the Occupational Health and Safety Act and Regulations and all other related manuals such as Covid-19 PPE protocols
Your Qualifications
- A strong interest in trail recreation, trail related planning and work.

- Previous trail building, design and planning experience will be considered a strong asset

The Landowner Outreach & Restoration team encourages, empowers, and assists residents to protect, enhance and restore the natural features they manage. Working as a part of this team, the Field Labourer, Ecosystem Restoration, will be involved in implementing rehabilitation projects (low to mid-level complexity), communicating with landowners and monitoring results post rehabilitation.

- Support the Landowner Outreach Technician, Restoration Project Technician and Restoration Project Specialist by undertaking project tasks as assigned.
- Record and assist with the maintenance of statistics associated with projects undertaken
- Conduct habitat and vegetation inventories to aid in restoration planning.
- Conduct pre- and post- rehabilitation monitoring.
- Work in accordance with the Conservation Halton’s Safety Policies & Procedures and the Occupational Health and Safety Act and Regulations and all other related manuals such as Covid-19 PPE protocols
- Other duties as assigned.
Your Qualifications
- Previous work or volunteer experience in a related field
- Working towards a university degree or college diploma in ecosystem restoration, biology, ecology, geography or fish and wildlife management
- Ability to work flexible schedules, including evenings and weekends as required.
- Effective communication skills, written and oral
- Efficient problem solving, multi-tasking and creative thinking skills
- Knowledge of local ecosystems
- Species identification skills, especially for native flora and terrestrial invasive species
- Knowledge of bioengineering techniques, methodology and principles
- Introductory experience implementing rehabilitation projects that involve bioengineering, especially in aquatic/riparian environments
- Experience driving a company vehicle and towing a trailer is an asset
- Experience using hand tools and power tools is an asset
- A valid Ontario Drivers Licence, minimum Class “G”, with a satisfactory Driver’s Abstract is required
- Successful candidate will be required to have Standard First Aid certification prior to first day of employment

- Lead Patrol Team shifts, supporting various parks as required
- Support visitor safety and accident reduction through positive interactions with visitors
- Responsible for ensuring the ongoing safety of visitors and staff by checking trails and surrounding areas for hazards or poor surface conditions
- Recognize risk and maintain signage to minimize trail hazards; coordinate with teams when required
- Be prepared for any type of incidents that may occur and follow up with documentation.
- Inspect all medical equipment, medical bags, and ATVs prior to start of shift
- Respond to incidents and provide First Aid and other support where required.
- Ensure all documentation is completed, reviewed, and submitted accurately in a timely manner
- Assist in risk management/accident investigations as required
- Offer support to other department services as required
- Work in a team environment and be prepared for any situation that may arise
- Safely operate ATV or vehicle in a variety of conditions (training provided)
- Support Beach Regulations and Policies.

- 1 – 2 year’s work experience with Conservation Halton Patrol is considered an asset
- Previous leadership experience is considered an asset
- Strong communication skills – both verbal and written documentation skills are essential
- Ability to enforce policies and procedures in a professional manner
- Able to lift up to 40 pounds, stand, and walk for long periods of time
- Successful candidates will be required to have Red Cross First Responder certification prior to first day of employment or complete training provided by Conservation Halton
- A valid Ontario Drivers Licence, minimum Class “G2”, with a satisfactory Driver’s Abstract is required
- Successful candidate will be required to provide a Vulnerable Sector Check (VSS), to verify the absence of a criminal record for which a pardon has not been granted (if over 18 years old)
