If you’re looking to escape the crowds for a quiet hike, or a photography session, or one-on-one time with your favourite four-legged friends this Family Day weekend, go to Mount Nemo. Shutterbugs bring your cameras and your iphones! Mount Nemo is beautiful when the snow covers the tree branches and the trails. Capture your family Christmas photo when it’s softly snowing.
Take your dog for a walk on the trails. If you’re looking for a convenient location for a winter hike away from the crowds, come to Mount Nemo for a peaceful, tranquil walk in the snow.
There’s so much you can do during Family Weekend at Rattlesnake Point. Give winter camping a try with your family and friends! It’s all in the preparation and planning beforehand. Or, you can bundle up, and bring hot chocolate, and take the whole family for winter hikes on the trails. The Vista Adventure trail is a short jaunt and easily accomplished in under an hour; and, if you want to push yourself a little more, take the Buffalo Crag trail, and see the escarpment glitter in the winter sun at the Buffalo Crag Lookout Points.
The winter is beautiful in Robert Edmondson Conservation Area. It’s our secret spot away from the crowds. The water freezes over, and the snow coats the tree branches. Photographers, fire up your cameras for sparkling winter pictures in the snow. Hike around the reservoir for a quiet, peaceful winter walk in nature.
Believe it or not, Hilton Falls is as beautiful in Winter as it is in the growing seasons. Your family will love seeing the frozen rivers, waterfall, and the reservoir sparkle in the clear winter sun. Bring your camera to catch the play of the sunlight on the icicles and snow. Roast marshmallows at the bonfire right beside falls and have the kids look for animal tracks in the snow.
The trails this time of year are perfect for winter hiking: Grab some bird seed to feed the chickadees at the falls. Children will be delighted when a Chickadee lands on their hand!
If you’d like more of a workout, a few of the trails are groomed for cross country skiing or fat biking. You can rent the skis at the Visitor Centre, and rentals are first-come, first-serve. Cross Country Skiing is weather dependent.
