They have a body smaller than a robin’s, raccoon-like mask across the eyes and resemble a sweet songbird. It's only when you pay attention to the Eastern Loggerhead Shrike's eating habits where you realize this cute bird has bite. Able to kill its prey in one swift blow, the Shrike indulges in a specialized feeding habit where the bird impales its snack on thorns or barbed wire and picks at the assortment of snakes, mice, insects or smaller birds. The Shrike is also a vital ‘indicator’ species.
This year, Conservation Halton and project partners embark on a very necessary initiative to bring the Eastern Loggerhead Shrike, an alarmingly endangered species, back from the brink of extinction.
